Indy 500 Safety Tips

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a track like no other, so make sure you are prepared.

If you have ever been to Indianapolis in May, you know the energy in the city is electric. After all, the Indy 500 is the greatest spectacle in racing (and all sports depending on who you ask). If you have ever been to the Indianapolis Speedway on race day, you know why. Before the crowds descend on the Speedway and the cars start going really fast and real left, check out these practical safety tips.

Can you handle the heat?

One of the most common hazards race fans face is exposure to the sun. Many attendees find themselves sitting in exposed bleachers. The 2024 race is projecting temperatures in the mid to high 70s with a small chance of thunderstorms, so include a rain jacket or poncho in your packing list. But ensure you have the following items just in case the sun comes out:

  • Sunscreen – aim for SPF 30 or higher
  • Hat & Sunglasses – protect your eyes and avoid squinting
  • Plenty of water – make sure you stay hydrated and remember – no glass containers

Ready for the historic speedway?

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a track like no other, so make sure you are prepared. Finding your seat can involve quite a trek through one of the largest racing facilities in the world. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes.

Before finding your seat, you will have to park your car. Traffic surrounding the speedway can be extremely congested, so our recommendation is to arrive as early as possible and have a plan for parking.

Finally, make sure you don’t pack anything that will end up getting confiscated at the gate. Coolers are a common culprit: they can be either hard- or soft-sided, but no larger than 18”x15”x15”. If you have young children, check your tickets for stroller and wagon access. Not all areas permit them.

A full list of permitted and banned items can be found on the IMS website.

Round out your packing list!

Make sure your Indy 500 experience goes off without a hitch with some additional items for comfort and safety. The big one is a first aid kit. Include Band-Aids, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer and some ibuprofen. Here a few other items to consider:

  • Headphones/ear plugs – the track is VERY loud, consider ear safety, especially if you have young kids
  • Snack and food – save some money and fend off hunger with your own favorite snacks
  • Race car printout – keep an eye on the action with a list of all the drivers and their car numbers
  • A radio – listening to a radio station covering the race will keep you updated on all the action on the pavement

Stay safe out there, race fans!

The Indianapolis 500 is an event like no other. As you head to the Speedway with a quarter-million other fans – bring your patience! If you are over the age of 21 and deciding to drink alcohol, make sure to have a sober driver or arrange a ride home from the track. But most importantly of all, have fun and make memories that will last a lifetime!
