Let me ask you this, “How successful are you with setting boundaries at work?”

No matter how much we love our jobs, our work does not define us. Thus, the importance of setting boundaries! Setting boundaries can help us be mindful of where we are spending our time and energy, it even help keep us feeling purposeful and fulfilled.

Here are three tips for setting boundaries at work:

  1. Be clear, concise, and confident: When communicating with coworkers or management, do so honestly and clearly, leaving behind uncertainty. Avoid starting a conversation with, “Hey, sorry to bother you but can you update me on XYZ?” Apologies often make us sound primed for a “no.” Instead try, “What is the status of XYZ?” Or, “Do you have a second to chat about ABC?”
  2. Set limits. What are your nonnegotiables? Take time to create a list of things in your personal life that you won’t miss and stand firm in these decisions. Perhaps you’re a parent, and a nonnegotiable for you is never missing your child’s school play, activity or event. Or maybe you choose to not view or respond to work emails outside of designated work hours. Whatever your nonnegotiables – make them priorities and don’t be afraid to be clear with your colleagues.
  3. Manage and negotiate expectations. Over time, our jobs evolve. Maybe we’ve been asked to do other tasks or projects outside of our original job description, or we have taken on additional responsibility. This is usually fine, as long as expectations for our roles remains realistic, clear and agreed upon by both parties. If you find yourself in a place where expectations aren’t clear, understood or agreed upon speak up for yourself.

Now go out there and set some boundaries!
