However you envision the New Year, try using a vision board to visualize this next chapter of your life.

2022 is coming to a close and as we approach the first of the year, you know what that means —New Year, New Me!

(Just kidding …mostly)

But really, while the saying may be overused, the premise behind it rings true: What will the New Year bring to my life? During this time of year, you may be thinking of resolutions to visit the gym more, eat healthier, or read more. Or perhaps you’re thinking about career goals like getting that promotion, making a big sale or earning a big bonus. Or maybe you’re dreaming about all the new places you’ll visit or friends you’ll see in 2023. However you envision the New Year, try using a vision board to visualize this next chapter of your life.

What’s a “Vision Board”?

A vision board is a visual representation of what you want to achieve. Think of it as a physical (or digital) collage of images and words that symbolize your goals and dreams. Sometimes they’re referred to as “dream boards” or “goal boards”. Whatever you refer to them as, vision boards can help you self-reflect on what’s important to you and help you focus and stay motivated on your goals throughout the year.

Getting Started

You can create a vision board at any time, such as if you’re experiencing a big change or entering a new phase of your life, which makes the start of a new year, the perfect time to create your vision board! Below are simple steps to get started:

  1. Consider what matters most to you
Take some time to reflect on what is most important to you. Think about what areas of your life you may want to change or what you’d like to manifest. This could be a physical thing (“I want to buy a house”), personality trait (positivity), health goals (running a 5K) or dreams (beach vacation), etc.
  2. Gather supplies
I recommend buying a large poster board. You’ll want to gather pictures and words that inspire you—this could come from old magazines, or you could print pictures and words that you find meaningful. Don’t forget to have your scissors handy and glue or tape.
  3. Make your vision board
You can create your vision board in one sitting or over a couple of days—however your inspirational and creative juices flow! You’ll take the pictures and words you’ve gathered that relate to your goals and dreams, then arrange them on your poster board however you’d like. The great thing about vision boards is that there are no rules. If your favorite color is purple, you can put as much purple on your vision board as you’d like – you’re making this vision board for yourself, so put whatever brings you feelings of inspiration.

Once you’ve finished your vision board, put it someplace where you’ll see it regularly such as your home office, your nightstand, your kitchen or even the main foyer. The key is to look at your vision board as often as possible to draw motivation and encouragement. And don’t be afraid to make updates to your board as you progress toward your goals throughout the year!
