Tips to Save Money on Your Prescription Drugs

As prescription drugs keep climbing in price, you might be wondering if there are better ways to save on them.

It can be hard to know if you’re getting the best deal on your prescriptions.

Where should you even begin? Any time you or a family member has a new prescription, pretend like you don’t have any pharmacy insurance benefits at all. You can then begin shopping for the best cash price you can for that prescription before insurance.

GoodRx is the largest coupon site online for prescription drug discounts, and the website Erin Albert, Pharmacist and Kinetiq Health Pharmacy Benefits Practice Leader, recommends most for finding discounts. However, there are several other places online where you can find discounts or coupons.

Just like any large purchase, shop around for the best deal before you fill your prescription. When buying a car, you’d typically shop around online or at different dealerships, and evaluate the make and model of several different vehicles. Purchasing prescriptions can be seen in the same way. Consider calling a few local pharmacies and asking for a cash price of your prescription before you fill it. Researching different places to buy your prescriptions will help ensure you’re getting the best price for your medicine.

One last tip – ask your pharmacist. Your pharmacist will know if it’s cheaper to pay cash for medicine instead of using insurance and paying the copay. Finding good deals on prescription drugs can be time consuming, but knowing you’re not overpaying for prescriptions is worth the time and effort.
