Be Safe While Enjoying the Summer Sun

Warm summer days call for more time outdoors. While you’re enjoying the sunshine, make sure you protect your skin in the process! According to the American Cancer Society, ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun are the leading cause of skin cancer. Overexposure to sunlight can cause sunburn, eye damage, and premature aging. Follow these tips to enjoy the sun responsibly:
- Use Sunscreen: Protect your skin by choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 30 sun protection factor (SPF). Be sure to reapply at least every two hours and especially after swimming or sweating.
- Cover Up: UV rays are strongest in the middle part of the day. If you are out during this time, wear clothing, hats, and sunscreen to protect your skin. Frequently take breaks in the shade to avoid overexposure.
- Don’t Forget your Eyes: The American Academy of Ophthalmology states that long exposure to bright sunlight can increase the risk of eye damage including cataracts, growths or in some cases cancer. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that block both UV-A and UV-B rays. These will be labeled as with UV400 or 100% UV protection.
Keep you and your family sun-safe this summer!
