December 8, 2021
The past year has been filled with challenges, milestones and hopefully some accomplished goals. As we look towards 2022, we begin to think about New Years’ resolutions and goals we want to obtain in the coming year.
But how many times have you set goals for yourself only to slide back into your old habits a couple of months later? We’ve all been there many times, but it’s time to change that. Here are three tips to help you make your goals stick!
- Set small, realistic goals. You can have an overarching or big goal; however, the problem often comes when we don’t take time to break down this goal into small, actionable steps. Try focusing on one specific behavior at a time before adding anything else to your plate.
- Be honest with yourself. Establishing new habits means truly understanding the current ones we are trying to replace. Believe it or not, feelings that have not been dealt with appropriately, stress, and other life struggles can leave us feeling stuck & unmotivated. If you find yourself here, take some time to truly be honest with yourself and know that there’s nothing wrong with reaching out for help.
- Don’t try to eliminate. Diet culture has already told us all the things we should and shouldn’t do or eat. But trying to eliminate something from our life entirely is unrealistic and just no fun! Instead, when creating goals try asking yourself, “What can I add that is going to help me make steps towards my goal?” The thought of adding is much more exciting than removing or restricting.
Just like 2021, 2022 will be full of surprises, challenges and memories. Start thinking about your 2022 goals now and what small steps you can do to accomplish them.
