Diabetes, obesity, eating a poor diet, and physical inactivity can all put you at a higher risk for heart disease. The great news, however, is that heart disease can be prevented when you make healthier choices and work with your health care team to manage conditions.
To jump-start your heart-health journey, try the following actions this week! Some examples include (but are not limited to):
- Replace soda with flavored water: Cutting out just one sugar-sweetened beverage can save you over 100 calories per day. Over a year, that adds up to about a 10-pound weight loss!
- When you are feeling overwhelmed, take 3 deep breaths: Breathing deeply can help clear your mind, help you relax, and lower blood pressure, particularly in times of stress.
- Take a 10-minute walk with a friend: Walking regularly can help decrease your risk for a cardiovascular event by improving cholesterol, blood pressure, obesity, mental stress, and more!
February is American Heart Month and the perfect time to begin taking action to help your heart. After all, it’s the only one you have!
