4 Ways to Maintain Your Fitness Motivation

Staying motivated can be difficult even under the best circumstances and, with everything else going on in our lives, the motivation to be active might be scarce.

However, just because we live busy lives doesn’t mean our fitness should take a back seat. If you’re having trouble staying motivated to work out, see below for a few tips to get you back on track.

  • Remember your why. Make a list of reasons why you want to accomplish a certain fitness goal. Why do you want to stay active? Maybe because it makes you feel better or accomplished when you’ve finished working out. Or maybe it’s because you want to be able to play with your kids or grandkids longer. It can help to visualize yourself when you’ve accomplished a goal when you’re lacking motivation.
  • Write down your goals. Having your goals written out and easily accessible can help you stick to them. Be as specific and detailed as possible. Scheduling your workouts with a time and place makes you more apt to complete a workout as well. Making time for exercise can be just like scheduling a meeting with yourself.
  • Tell someone. The road to success can be a long one, so don’t travel alone. Research shows that committing your goals to someone gives you at least a 65% chance of completing them. Stating your intentions and goals to others creates an accountability partner who can encourage you and help keep you motivated.
  • Be prepared to deal with low motivation. It’s almost inevitable that at some point in your journey, you’ll be faced with a lack of motivation, adversity or setbacks. Being prepared for these moments will be key in moving past them faster and come back stronger.

Motivation is that it comes and goes. Even elite athletes aren’t motivated 100% of the time to exercise every day. But what doesn’t come and go is your discipline and the habits that you have in place. Try to think long term to crush your goals.
