Stay Healthy When Dining Out

Stay Healthy When Dining Out

Struggling to find healthy foods when dining out? Choosing healthier options may be easier than you think. Try these alternatives the next time you find yourself dining at a restaurant or going through a drive-thru:

Choose Water Over Carbonated Beverages

Carbonated beverages usually contain a lot of sugar, which can contribute to extra, unwanted calories. Water contains no sugar, calories or fat. Choosing water over soda can cut a meal’s calories up to 50%!

Choose Grilled Over Fried

Lower-fat options, such as grilled meats and vegetables, can help reduce cholesterol intake and prevent heart disease and stroke.

Choose à la Carte Over a Combo

Fast food meal combos usually include a sandwich, French fries and a drink. The fries and drink add unnecessary calories and fats. Try just ordering the sandwich or a healthier side.

Choose a Side of Fruit or Veggies Over Fries or Chips

As mentioned, avoiding fried foods will help lower overall fat intake and cholesterol and decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke. Many restaurants offer other sides. Opt for fruit or veggies, a side salad with vinaigrette dressing on the side, rice or broth-based soups. It’s also important to remember the serving size. Many sides come with a choice of small, medium or large. Choosing a smaller size can also help reduce the overall calories of the meal.

Check the Menu Ahead of Time

Many restaurants post their menus online. Some may even provide nutritional information. If you know where you’ll be eating, check the menu ahead of time and plan your order.

Avoid Filling Up on Appetizers

Filling up on food before the main meal can lead to overeating. If you’re at a restaurant that provides bread or chips, limit the amount you eat so you’re still hungry when your meal arrives. If you order an appetizer, try a healthier one that’s not fried or accompanied by creamy dips.

Consider Your Toppings

Sandwiches, salads and other foods often come with a choice of toppings, from sauces to cheese to bacon. These extras add calories and fat to your meal. Try limiting the number of toppings you use or ask for them on the side so you can control the amount you eat.

You can enjoy dining out and eating healthier by making a few minor adjustments. Try a few of these tips the next time you’re at a restaurant or drive-thru to improve your overall health and well-being.
