Making the Most of Your Employee Assistance Program: A Guide to Better Well-Being at Work

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a valuable benefit many employers offer, yet it typically sees only a 3–5% utilization rate. This free resource is designed to support employees in various ways, but many people struggle to take full advantage of it. The key lies in understanding what’s available and how to access it.

What is an Employee Assistance Program?

If your company offers an EAP, you, your spouse and dependents can access employer-sponsored support that provides free therapy and work/life resources. Services are confidential and include mental health counseling, financial planning, legal advice and crisis support.

A common misconception is that your employer will know if you use EAP services—but that’s false. Everything is 100% confidential and protected. EAPs exist to help make life’s everyday stressors more manageable.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your EAP:

  1. Know What’s Covered.
EAPs often provide far more than just mental health support. Offerings may include legal and financial consultations, childcare and elder care referrals, and other tools for balancing work and life.
  2. Don’t Wait for a Crisis—Be Proactive.
While EAPs are great for crisis support, they’re just as effective for preventing crises. If you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed or stuck, reach out early—getting support before things escalate can make a big difference.
  3. Include Your Family.
Many EAPs extend services to household members. If your partner, teenager or even a parent living with you needs help, they may be eligible for assistance.
  4. Keep Contact Information Handy.
Save the EAP phone number or website in your phone or inbox. Having quick access makes it easier to reach out when you need help.
  5. Spread the Word.
Your coworkers might not be aware of the EAP or how helpful it can be. Sharing what you’ve learned could encourage someone else to take that important first step toward getting support.

Employee Assistance Programs are often underutilized, but they offer a wide range of confidential, no-cost services that can make a real difference in your personal and professional life. Whether navigating stress, facing a challenging life situation or simply looking for guidance on everyday challenges, your EAP is a trusted resource already available to you. By learning what’s covered, being proactive, including your family, keeping the information accessible and spreading the word, you can help create a workplace culture where well-being is prioritized and support is just a phone call or click away.
