Grace joined Apex Benefits in May 2022 as a sales and marketing intern. She is currently a junior at Valparaiso University.
Intern Spotlight: Kelsie James
I didn’t know precisely what Apex did when I started my internship. I just knew that they worked with insurance in some way. As my internship ends, I can fully explain everything Apex does for its clients and employees.
Having finished my sophomore year at Valparaiso University, I was nervous about starting an internship. I knew I would likely be the youngest and least experienced new hire. However, the Apex staff did a great job making me feel comfortable and included.
As a Sales and Marketing Intern, I was afforded opportunities to work in areas that align with what I hope to turn into a career path. I entered this role wanting to learn as much as possible and experience all Apex has to offer, and I did.
Apex allowed me to explore areas of interest and engage with tasks that helped me feel like part of the team. When things became overwhelming, I had people there to help and support me. My managers, Steve Winbun and Margaret Osborn, were willing to help and provide the support and resources I needed.
In addition to them, I also had a colleague you could call my partner in crime, Grace Brenton. Grace was my fellow Sales and Marketing Intern. We worked together on every project and task we were given and through our collaboration, we have created a great friendship outside of work!
I am excited for this next school year because I feel much more prepared and ready for any projects and assignments my professors will give me. I am excited for this next school year to approach my schoolwork with a new perspective from the business world, allowing it to have more meaning to me than just a grade letter.
The most memorable part of each day in the internship was every morning when I walked into work and was greeted with a smile and small talk. This started my morning off right from every person I saw on the way to my desk.
Every coworker has impacted me in some way, as all Apex employees not only care about their work and their clients, but they also care about each other. Everybody was willing to lend a hand in any way they could to help out those in need.
Apex was such a great experience and a fantastic place to work. There was no other way I would have rather spent my 2022 summer! Thank you, Apex team!
Thank you for all your hard work and enthusiasm this summer, Kelsie! Good luck at Valparaiso, we will miss you!
