This week, we’re covering the importance of establishing a primary care provider (PCP). Having a reliable and knowledgeable primary care provider team is essential. Think of them as your healthcare quarterback, guiding you through the complexities of medical care. They can ensure you receive the best possible support.
These healthcare professionals help you stay on top of preventative care activities such as vaccinations, screenings and other health assessments, including mammograms and yearly skin checks. They are also key in managing chronic conditions and recommending specialists.
As we enter the fall season and common cold viruses, flu, COVID and many other illnesses approach us, establishing a PCP becomes even more important. Once you are established with a PCP, it becomes easier to get an appointment, especially when you are sick or not feeling well. This helps to begin treatment sooner and is also a less expensive option compared to an urgent care facility or emergency room.
How can you find a PCP and what should you be looking for?
- Think about the type of doctor or practitioner that fits your needs. Consider preferences such as gender or communication style. Ask family, friends or coworkers for recommendations if you don’t know where to start.
- Make sure the provider is in your insurance network. You can usually find this on your insurance provider’s website or by calling the number on the back of your insurance card.
- Call the provider’s office to discover more that may be important to you, such as hours, locations or access to a portal.
- Once you’ve narrowed down your search, it is important to schedule an appointment and become an established patient. As a warning, wait times to get into some providers may be long, so be patient.
Most importantly, find a PCP that works for you—someone you can trust who will provide a positive experience that can help lay the foundation for your preventative and long-term health.
