Create an Environment That Supports Mental Health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the many factors that contribute to our emotional well-being. One area we often overlook in our mental health journey is our immediate environment—the spaces we inhabit and the people we surround ourselves with.

Our surroundings play a powerful role in shaping our mood, emotions and overall wellness. From natural settings to social interactions to physical spaces, each element of our environment can either uplift or weigh us down.

The good news? Small, intentional changes can have a meaningful impact.

  1. Reconnect with Nature

Nature has an incredible ability to soothe the mind and body. Studies show that spending time outdoors can reduce stress, improve mood and foster a sense of calm.

Is there a park, walking trail or bike path nearby where you can spend time outside? Even short breaks in a green space can make a big difference. And if getting outside isn’t an option, bring the outdoors in. Houseplants and flowers offer visual comfort and help purify the air. Even nature-inspired art can offer visual comfort. Some plants, like lavender and jasmine, offer calming scents that promote relaxation.

  1. Assess Your Social Circles

The people in our lives play a significant role in our mental health. Positive social environments provide support, connections and a sense of belonging. But not all relationships are beneficial. If certain interactions leave you feeling drained, anxious or overwhelmed, it may be time to reevaluate those connections.

Setting healthy boundaries, reducing time spent with toxic individuals and actively seeking out supportive communities can help improve mental and emotional health.

  1. Organize Your Physical Space

Have you ever noticed how a cluttered room can make your mind feel equally cluttered? Our physical spaces directly affect our mood and stress levels. A clean, organized area often promotes calm, while messes can increase feelings of anxiety.

If organizing your space feels overwhelming, start small. Choose one drawer, shelf or corner and work from there. Breaking the process into manageable steps makes it less intimidating and more manageable. Even small efforts—like adding soft lighting, calming colors or a cozy reading nook—can transform the atmosphere of your home or workspace.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that taking care of your mind doesn’t always require big changes—sometimes, the smallest shifts in your environment can have the biggest impact. Whether it’s incorporating more nature, nurturing positive relationships or decluttering your space, remember that creating surroundings that support your well-being is a powerful step toward better mental health.
