May is Mental Health Awareness Month. However, Apex Benefits, a Best Place to Work in Indiana for 11 consecutive years, devotes resources into its employee’s well-being year-round.
Apex’s annual wellness challenge took on a soccer theme, titled, “90:15 Wellness Challenge.” The goal is to have employees spend 15 minutes per day doing something to better their overall health.
Six 15-minute activities in a week totals 90 minutes of activity for the week – also the length of a full soccer match.
The activities focused on various aspects of wellness such as physical, financial, mental, occupational, social, intellectual, spiritual and cultural. For instance, one challenge may be to call a loved one, while another would be to clean a space in your home that you’ve keep putting off.
“The 90:15 Wellness Challenge is unlike any wellness program we’ve done in the past,” said Jacquie Vail, Kinetiq Health Program Manager and head of internal wellness at Apex. “It incorporates all disciplines of wellness because we truly want our employees to focus on overall wellness and not just one specific area of wellness.”
Here’s how the challenge worked:
- The first week’s worth of activities was emailed to Apex employees Monday, May 3.
- Apex employees were to finish each activity per day, and keep a record of which ones they completed.
- The following Monday, another email was sent out for the next week’s challenges along with a link to record which activities from the prior week were finished.
Each completed activity counted as an entry toward the grand prize of the challenge – tickets and merchandise from Indy Eleven, a corporate partner of Apex Benefits.
For extra motivation, Indy Eleven coach Martin Rennie sent a video to Apex employees telling them to keep up the good work.
