The Line – June 2017

When you think Apex, you most often think about a peak, summit, or pinnacle – an object reaching the highest point along its path. The Line this object travels is typically the most efficient & effective path possible. We’re in the business of earning trust from prospective clients and, subsequently, pulling through on promises for clients. Meet the people who take The Line on behalf of our clients.

Philanthropy:
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge animal lover, especially dogs! Having a rescue pup of my own who went through somewhat of a rough patch before we met, means that it’s very important for me to support local animal shelters whether it’s donations or volunteering. Donating items or money helps to ensure the animals have food, bedding, toys and any health assistance. Volunteering your time can include many responsibilities, but the most valuable one is being able to help them get ready to find their “fur-ever” family. Who knows, you may just find your next best friend there…or four!

A Habit Worth Picking Up:
STRETCHING! Stretching increases your range of motion of your joints which helps reduce the risk of injury and relieves post-exercise aches and pains. Stretching can also help you relax and relieve stress. Throughout your day, make sure to get up at least once every hour to just do some easy stretching to mobilize your joints and muscles as well as to stay energized and focused all day long.

Life Hack:
Plan your meals ahead for the entire week. This has saved me from the weekly/daily go around of, “What’s for dinner?” Planning your meals ahead also helps you to save time and money, two things that are very valuable to all of us. Write your weekly meal plan out on the calendar or dry erase board on the fridge so that everyone in the house knows what’s for dinner ahead of time and may even help you prepare it.

What’s the best book you’ve read recently?
I just finished reading Seveneves by Neal Stephenson and became a huge fan of his work. The book explores how the Earth would react in an apocalyptic scenario and follows a group of survivors as they take to space to wait for Earth to become habitable in the future. The book is not a light read but is quite interesting for anyone who has an interest in Space and science. It is a great Sci-Fi / fiction read. I am on to my second Neal Stephenson book, Cryptomaniac, and am enjoying it as much as the first. Let me know if you want to borrow either!

Easy meal recommendation
As the worst chef employed at Apex, take my recommendation with a grain of salt. My favorite easy meal to cook, however, is a taco ring. You arrange a crescent roll in a circle and fill it with taco meat, seasoning, and cheese. Bake it and then serve with a side ofqueso fordip. Margarita optional.

Money saving tip
Before I worked at Apex, I interned several times at Stifel Nicolaus where we specialized in 401k’s. The most important money tip I can give is the importance of saving early. Compounding interest makes investing money in a 401k early on in your career a smart and easy decision. I was always surprised to see that people who started investing early in life had more saved than people who made significantly higher salaries but started saving much later in life. Apex is also generous enough to offer a company match which equates to free money! Please seize that opportunity and invest.

What is your favorite music/song/band?
I enjoy listening to all types of music and my tastes change with the seasons. Now that spring is in full swing, I am listening to a lot of country and laid back music. My favorite band at the moment is Hootie and the Blowfish. They are a great band to have playing while relaxing outside by the pool and grilling out. My favorite song, Hold My Hand, is also by Hootie and the Blowfish.

What are a few things on your travel bucket list?
I would really love to visit Ireland,Spain and Italy. Preferably, the non-touristy places. I’m all about the traditions and seeing how everyday people live.

What are your workplace must haves?
A radio and a water bottle. A radio is a must have. I love music and it provides enough background noise to keep me focused. A water bottle, every desk should have one, filled with water. It keeps you hydrated and it’s a great way to get your daily requirements…not to mention, your skin will thank you for it.

What is your best piece of advice for work or life in general?
Treat others as you would like to be treated. Don’t worry so much about what others think of you.
